Are you the entertaining type who’s always looking for an excuse to throw a party, host a dinner, or have friends over for drinks? While we are quite inclined to look at the interior of our homes as the perfect venue for entertaining, we don’t always consider what the outdoors has to offer. Here are some tips you can use that will help you create a comfortable and inviting outdoor entertaining space, giving you even more options when it comes to hosting your next event.
Build a Deck or Patio
First we’ll look at the big ticket project, and that’s to build a patio or deck. This provides you with the perfect area to frame the living space. Ideally the patio or deck will run along the back of your house, and incorporate any door you have from your home out to the backyard (for example your sliding doors).
In terms of the size, the bigger the better with patios as you’d be surprised how quickly you fill the space.
Pick Comfortable Durable Furniture
When it comes to outdoor furniture there is a massive variety when it comes to quality. While the cheap plastic variety certainly has its place, if you are trying to create an outdoor living space, you really want to put comfort and durability at the top of the list. You want to be sure the furniture is comfortable to sit in for hours at a time while your guests are relaxing and lounging.
To help warm up the space, you can purchase decorative pillows for the furniture that brighten up the patio and give it personality. If your patio/deck isn’t covered, you’ll probably want to purchase a table that can accommodate an umbrella so your guests have the option of sitting in the shade.
Pick a Design Theme
If you were decorating the living room inside your home, you would have some sort of theme you are working with – a color palette if you will. It’s a good idea to use this same approach when approaching your outdoor space too. Pick a color palette you want to work with, and a theme if you like, and start to build around it.
You can incorporate this theme through the outdoor dishes, outdoor decorations and figures, an outdoor rug, and your lighting.
Make it Pest Free
Lastly you want to make sure the backyard is pest free when it comes to insects and bugs. No-one wants to be swatting away the pests as they are trying to socialize. If you do have a problem with insects it’s best to call in the professionals, so you know the problem will be taken care of promptly and effectively.
Enjoy Your Added Entertaining Space
By using your outdoor space as a place to socialize and entertain, you are increasing the square footage of living space in your home. Your yard offers all kinds of fabulous opportunities for entertaining, and during the summer months there’s nothing better than getting out and enjoying the fresh air.
